Storyboarder.ai

Characters that stay recognisable across an AI storyboard

Storyboarder.ai turns a script into a finished storyboard. We built the character persistence: describe a character once, and they look the same in every panel. At a time when image generation could not do that on its own.

Challenge

A storyboard only works if you recognise the cast. That was exactly where image generation fell short back then: you described "Bruce Wayne, dark hair, square jaw, scar over the left brow", got a good frame, and the next panel showed a different person. For directors, agencies and production teams that made the output unusable, because a board has to carry a character across twenty or thirty shots.

Approach

We pulled characters out of the prompt and made them first-class objects. Every character gets a project entry with a description and a curated reference set that travels with every generation. On top of that came prompt composition that keeps character, scene, camera angle and style cleanly separated, controlled seeds and image conditioning, and a scoring loop that checks new panels against the reference set automatically instead of relying on someone eyeballing it. Built into the product Django backend, frontend in Alpine.js and jQuery, shipped containerised through a CI/CD pipeline.

Outcome

Characters defined once became a cast that carries the whole board: the same person in every shot, across scenes and camera angles, with nobody nudging things per panel. Character consistency is still one of the things the product leads with.
